Straw, raffia and toquilla
August 16, 2026

The weaves worth investing in and how each one ages.
Not every straw hat is made of straw. Toquilla is the fine palm fibre behind a true panama; raffia comes from a palm leaf and has a softer, more rustic hand; paper straw is a durable everyday option that holds colour well.
Toquilla is woven so finely that a good hat can be rolled for travel. It is also the most sensitive to water, so keep it dry and reshape it only while barely damp.
Raffia is more forgiving. It takes a crease, handles a little humidity and softens with age.
Paper straw sits in the middle: light, affordable and easy to look after. Brush it, keep it away from long spells of rain and it will last for years.
