Hat care guide
Care for the hat you keep.
Brush, do not wash
Felt and straw hats are cleaned with a soft brush, working clockwise around the crown. Brush after wear to lift dust out of the nap instead of into it.
If it gets wet
Shake off the rain and leave the hat to dry naturally at room temperature, resting on its crown. Never dry a felt hat on a radiator or with a hairdryer: heat shrinks the felt and distorts the brim.
Reshaping a brim
Steam the brim over a kettle, bend gently with both hands and hold the shape until it cools. Small changes at a time are better than one hard crease.
Store it with room to breathe
Rest felt hats crown down on a shelf, or in a hat box with the crown supported. Knitted hats fold flat. Keep everything away from direct sunlight so the colour stays even.
Straw and knit
Keep straw away from long exposure to damp and reshape it while it is very slightly damp. Knitted hats can be hand washed cool, pressed gently in a towel and dried flat.
