Five hats that travel well

A good travel hat has to do two things: survive the bag and suit more than one outfit.

A packable straw hat rolls or folds flat and springs back when you shake it out. A fine knit beanie folds into a jacket pocket and takes up no space at all.

For something more structured, choose a felt with a soft brim that can be packed crown-down in a suitcase with the inside filled with socks. It comes out ready to wear.

Take one hat for sun and one for cold if the trip crosses seasons. They weigh almost nothing and solve most of the packing decisions.
